Am I ISTP or INTP? Here's How to Tell

ISTP and INTP share a dominant function — Ti (introverted thinking), the internal logic engine. Both solve problems by breaking them into principles. The difference is the auxiliary that feeds Ti. ISTP uses Se (extraverted sensing) — concrete, present-moment, hands-on. INTP uses Ne (extraverted intuition) — abstract, possibility-space. Same engine, completely different fuel.

The core difference

ISTP reasons about physical systems and does — mechanic, pilot, sniper, surgeon. INTP reasons about conceptual systems and theorizes — philosopher, programmer, mathematician. One fixes the engine. The other models engines that don't exist yet.

Behavioural differences

  • Problem domain

    ISTP: ISTP problems are concrete — broken thing, physical skill, performance under pressure.

    INTP: INTP problems are abstract — logical contradictions, model correctness, conceptual frameworks.

  • Physical vs mental

    ISTP: ISTP is often physically skilled — athletic, mechanical, dexterous.

    INTP: INTP is often physically unskilled (or indifferent) but conceptually agile.

  • With new hobbies

    ISTP: ISTP picks up hands-on hobbies quickly — motorcycles, archery, climbing.

    INTP: INTP picks up intellectual hobbies — new languages, programming paradigms, philosophy.

  • Response to crisis

    ISTP: ISTP becomes unusually calm and acts decisively in physical crisis.

    INTP: INTP freezes in physical crisis but thrives in 'what's wrong with this model' crises.

Quick self-check

  • 1. Do you enjoy fixing/making physical things, or theorising about how things work?

    Fix = ISTP · Theorise = INTP

  • 2. In a physical crisis, are you unusually calm and decisive, or do you freeze?

    Calm = ISTP · Freeze = INTP

  • 3. Are your hobbies more physical (sports, crafts) or more conceptual (languages, code, philosophy)?

    Physical = ISTP · Conceptual = INTP

  • 4. When bored, do you go outside and do something, or go deeper into your head?

    Outside = ISTP · Deeper = INTP

Verdict

Both reason. ISTPs reason about the physical world they can touch. INTPs reason about the conceptual world they can model. If you're drawn to making things work with your hands, you're ISTP. If you're drawn to making models work in your head, you're INTP.
