Am I INFJ or INTJ? Here's How to Tell

INFJ and INTJ share a dominant cognitive function — Ni, the long-horizon pattern synthesis. That's why both can feel like 'seers' who read situations unusually early. The difference is in how they translate that vision outward. INFJ uses Fe (extraverted feeling) and tunes visions to people. INTJ uses Te (extraverted thinking) and tunes them to systems. One becomes a counselor/activist/strategist-of-minds. The other becomes an architect/builder/strategist-of-things.

The core difference

Same vision engine, different translators. INFJ asks 'how does this vision serve the humans in it?' INTJ asks 'what's the most efficient way to implement this vision?' INFJ mistypes as INTJ when they're suppressing their Fe (often because the environment punishes emotion). INTJ mistypes as INFJ when they romanticise their detachment.

Behavioural differences

  • In meetings

    INFJ: INFJ reads subtext, tracks who's been hurt, makes sure the quiet ones are heard.

    INTJ: INTJ tracks the logical structure of the argument, notes inefficiencies, interrupts bad reasoning.

  • When their vision is ignored

    INFJ: INFJ internalises the rejection as a failure of relationship or communication.

    INTJ: INTJ externalises it — either the audience isn't smart enough, or the execution plan needs adjusting.

  • Under stress

    INFJ: INFJ loops in Ti (isolates to analyse) and can become bitterly critical of self.

    INTJ: INTJ loops in Se (impulsive sensory indulgence) — binge-eats, binge-watches, goes on sudden sprees.

  • In relationships

    INFJ: INFJ tracks the other person's emotional weather constantly.

    INTJ: INTJ builds a mental model of the other person and gets frustrated when actual behavior deviates.

Quick self-check

  • 1. When you disagree with a leader, do you feel 'they don't understand the people,' or 'their reasoning is wrong'?

    People = INFJ · Reasoning = INTJ

  • 2. Does rejection feel like a relational failure or an intellectual failure?

    Relational = INFJ · Intellectual = INTJ

  • 3. Under stress, do you spiral into self-criticism, or do you impulsively act on Se (indulgence)?

    Self-crit = INFJ · Indulgence = INTJ

  • 4. When you advise someone, do you start with what they're feeling or with what they should do?

    Feeling = INFJ · Should = INTJ

Verdict

If Fe (tuning to people) is a dominant operating mode, you're INFJ. If Te (tuning to systems) is, you're INTJ. The suppression trap: many INFJs in cold/technical environments suppress Fe and mistype as INTJ. If emotion feels like a 'weak spot' you've trained yourself away from, you might be an INFJ in INTJ clothing.
