Am I INFJ or INFP? Here's How to Tell
INFJ and INFP are the two most-confused MBTI types. Both are quiet, deep, emotionally attuned, and allergic to shallow interactions. What separates them is not how much they feel — it's how their mind organises what they feel. INFJs lead with Ni (introverted intuition) and support it with Fe (extraverted feeling). INFPs lead with Fi (introverted feeling) and support it with Ne (extraverted intuition). That function-order difference drives almost every surface-level distinction.
The core difference
INFJ builds one big internal framework and then reads others' emotions into it. INFP runs every experience through a personal values filter, then explores possibilities from there. INFJ asks 'what does this mean?' INFP asks 'does this feel true to who I am?'
Behavioural differences
When they disagree
INFJ: INFJ goes quiet, absorbs the friction, and over time either door-slams or quietly reshapes the relationship.
INFP: INFP feels the violation to their values acutely and either withdraws or advocates strongly depending on how safe they feel.
How they make decisions
INFJ: INFJ converges fast to one 'right' answer based on their internal vision.
INFP: INFP holds multiple possibilities open and resists closing unless a choice aligns with deep values.
With new people
INFJ: INFJ adapts to the emotional temperature of the room (Fe) and feels seen when others understand the complexity behind their surface calm.
INFP: INFP stays more uniformly themselves across contexts (Fi) and feels seen when their specific values are recognised and respected.
Biggest blind spot
INFJ: INFJ over-reads intent and can project a fully-formed narrative onto someone who doesn't actually have one.
INFP: INFP avoids concrete action when the world doesn't match their ideal, and can moralise disagreement rather than engage with facts.
Quick self-check
1. In conflict, do you feel a 'this is wrong' certainty, or a 'this violates what I stand for' ache?
→ Certainty = INFJ · Values-ache = INFP
2. When someone asks your opinion, do you describe a future pattern or explore how it sits with you?
→ Future pattern = INFJ · How it sits = INFP
3. Do you 'read' a room's emotional state automatically (and sometimes over-adjust), or do you stay more consistent across rooms?
→ Read & adjust = INFJ · Consistent = INFP
4. Do you lean toward closure and a plan, or toward keeping options open and authentic?
→ Closure = INFJ · Open = INFP
Verdict
If you recognised Ni's 'I already saw this coming' pattern and Fe's emotional tuning, you're likely INFJ. If you recognised Fi's unshakeable 'this is who I am' plus Ne's branching possibilities, you're likely INFP. Both types share the same counterfeit — generic introvert-feeler content online bleeds them together. The cognitive-function stack is the real differentiator.
